What to Expect from Low-Fee Counselling

Starting counselling can feel like a big step.

Starting low-fee counselling can bring even more questions.

Many people wonder:

“Will the counselling be different because it costs less?”

“Will I still receive quality care?”

“What happens during the first session?”

These are completely normal questions.

At Orchard Valley Counselling, our Low-Fee Counselling Program is designed to make professional mental health support more accessible while providing compassionate, client-centred care.

Here’s what you can expect.

Your First Session Is About Getting to Know You

Many people worry they’ll be expected to share their entire life story during their first appointment.

That isn’t usually the case.

The first session is an opportunity to:

  • Talk about what brings you to counselling
  • Discuss your goals
  • Ask questions
  • Learn how counselling works
  • Decide whether the counsellor feels like a good fit

There is no pressure to talk about anything before you’re ready.

Counselling moves at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

You’ll Be Working with a Master’s-Level Practicum Counsellor

Our Low-Fee Counselling Program is provided by graduate students completing master’s-level counselling programs.

Before seeing clients, they complete extensive education in counselling theory, ethics, communication, and mental health.

Throughout their practicum, they receive regular supervision from experienced clinical supervisors.

This means you benefit from both a dedicated counsellor and the guidance of an experienced professional.

What Happens During Ongoing Sessions?

Every counselling journey is different.

Depending on your goals, sessions may focus on:

  • Managing stress or anxiety
  • Improving relationships
  • Navigating life transitions
  • Building coping skills
  • Exploring emotions
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Developing healthier patterns

Your counsellor will work collaboratively with you rather than telling you what you “should” do.

The goal is to help you better understand yourself and move toward the changes that matter to you.

Is Low-Fee Counselling Confidential?

Yes.

Your privacy is taken seriously.

Like other counselling services, your sessions are confidential within the limits required by law and professional ethics.

Your counsellor will explain confidentiality during your first appointment and answer any questions you may have.

Is Low-Fee Counselling Different from Regular Counselling?

The biggest difference is the fee.

The counselling process itself is built on the same principles of compassion, respect, collaboration, and evidence-informed practice.

Practicum counsellors receive regular supervision throughout their placement, helping ensure clients receive thoughtful and ethical care.

Many clients find the experience every bit as supportive as they expected and often more so.

Is This Program Right for You?

Our Low-Fee Counselling Program is intended for people who:

  • Do not have extended health insurance for counselling
  • Meet the program’s financial eligibility criteria
  • Are looking for affordable, professional mental health support
  • Feel their needs are appropriate for a supervised practicum setting

During intake, we’ll talk with you about your goals and help determine whether the program is the right fit.

If another service would better meet your needs, we’ll discuss those options with you.

Taking the First Step

Beginning counselling doesn’t mean you have everything figured out.

You don’t need to know exactly what to say.

You don’t need to have all the answers.

Simply need a willingness to start the conversation.

That first appointment is about creating a safe space where you can begin exploring what’s been weighing on you.
