Online Therapy

By Christine Ferch

This current pandemic has raised a lot of questions and concerns as uncertainty continues. Are you wanting to reach out and seek mental health support but are unsure of the idea of completing a telephone or video session?

These feelings are valid as they are many factors involved in this process, making it different than a simple in-person 1-1 session. However, in the end, both forms of therapy can provide the same benefits. One way to look at it, if it were not effective, licensing bodies of the variety of therapists out there, would not be able to utilize it because it would be deemed unethical.

Studies have shown that the benefits of in-person sessions are still present with a video or telephone conversation. Creating the rapport or relationship between a client and therapist can occur despite the lack of presence. Therapists can identify when a client may need some silence to think or feel and provide reassurance they are still there, and the client is still safe.

Although facets such as body language may be more difficult to notice, the therapist becomes more in tune with the non-verbal body language such as micro expressions to gain insight on how the individual is truly feeling.

Current clients who have used this method did not feel any different about the experience being online as opposed to in person. They felt they engage in a virtual realm enough already from Facetime, Skype, Zoom meetings, etc., this was just a typical component of their daily life. Their comments regarding quality were substantial due to the program used as there was little lag and did not freeze.

A few commonly asked questions regarding this form of therapy:

1: Setting up an appointment:

You can go to the website:

http://www.orchardvalleycounselling.ca/ to book an appointment online

or Phone at:

We also offer a free 20 minutes phone consultation where you can speak with a counsellor before the appointment and get an idea or feeling whether the counsellor is right for you.

2. Payments:

Payments can be made either through e-transfer or credit card, and you can also prepay for your appointment, if you create an appointment online.

3. How do sessions begin? Do I need an app?

The counsellor will inform you of what program they use. I use Doxy, and I send a meeting link via text or email. The client clicks on the link, and they enter their name. Their name appears in my “waiting room” and I create the call, NO app required!

4. What will sessions look like?

The counsellor will provide an outlook on how the sessions will be completed in a collaborative process, meaning, you can provide your insight if you feel something may be unattainable.

Tips:

-Before the session, make sure your video and microphone work, so you do not lose time.

– Technology is a beautiful thing, but it is not without some complications, be prepared, there may be some hiccups

– For reduced lagging and freezing, reduce the number of programs running on your computer during the session

– Keep other electronics on mute or away from you to reduce distraction during the session

– Find a cozy and private spot (if possible) for the session
